The 2011 Oktoberfest Medallion Hunt sponsored by Wipfli, LLP ended Friday, September 17th!
Congratulations to the finder of 2011 Oktoberfest Medallion finder, Paul Hoch!
Paul found the Medallion at 8:30 am today in the crack of a tunnel under Losey Blvd between Myrick Park and Hixon Forest near the Boy Scout Center. This is Paul’s 2nd year of Medallion hunting and he was able to do so the last couple of years based on work hours and availability. Hoch is a Nurse in Intensive Care at Gundersen Lutheran and lives with his wife Michelle, and their 6-year old son Lucas in West Salem, WI.
Paul stated that “he appreciates Oktoberfest doing the Medallion Hunt because it gave him a chance to see some great spots in La Crosse that he hadn’t visited before…finding the Medallion was just a bonus!”
Paul will receive a gift package which includes $500 cash, two tickets to the Festmaster's Ball, several gift certificates, and a miniature replica medallion, compliments of Satori Arts. The hunt is sponsored by Wipfli, LLP. Gift certificates have been donated by Downtown Mainstreet.
Thank you all for following our 2011 Oktoberfest Medallion Hunt and to our sponsor Wipfli, and our crafty clue writer, for ensuring our Medallion Hunt happens every year!
Entire List of 2011 Medallion Hunt:
Clue #1 — Monday, Sept. 12
Gemutlichkeit … your friends are here,
That’s the theme to guide Oktoberfest this year;
The elusive medallion is out there again,
Be prepared to let the clues lead the way, so let’s begin!
Clue #2 — Tuesday, Sept. 13
Start at the earliest place for a quick summer cool,
Opened with an Olympic gold medalist and Chicago greats too;
A WWI veteran who returned following respiratory aid,
Built homes in the neighborhood for many more than a decade.
Clue #3 — Wednesday, Sept. 14
Mounds of history are buried there and here,
Today, buildings, tables and, nearby, a place to cheer;
The earliest spot for a county-wide exposition,
Later named for a man who stopped on his westward expedition.
Clue #4 — Thursday, Sept. 15
The sisters purchased land from an estate,
Hope to build a school, but ran into a city stalemate;
Later purchased by a developer who built more than 75 homes,
Among his other projects, built a cemetery wall of Grandad stones.
Clue #5 — Friday, Sept. 16
Its beginning stretches back to the mid-1880s,
More than 50 years later became one of the city’s main arteries;
Eventually, named for an association president and attorney,
He worked to beautify what became a popular cemetery.
Clue #6 — Saturday, Sept. 17
Historic districts are nearby and a short hike away,
Fall Friday evenings you’ll hear sounds of cheers and the PA;
To the northwest there’s a perfect aquatic laboratory,
A short distance away, trees, plants and bushes, as well as respect for Old Glory.
Clue #7 — Sunday, Sept. 18
Despite living on an unlucky street,
Plowed through nearly half a century in a chamber seat;
The edge of the woods from Joe and Irene,
The triangular place is now a welcoming green.
Clue #8 — Monday, Sept. 19
The gateway path through the river valley remains,
Dates back to the mid-1800s and competed with trains;
The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy tracked in the way,
A Depression-era overhead saved the road’s day.
Clue #9 — Tuesday, Sept. 20
Snow White, Cinderella, Shrek and others were there,
Welcoming kids of all ages in the cool autumn air;
The paths remain for walkers, joggers and even a corps,
The Halloween enchantment moved west along the swampy shore.
Clue # 10 — Wednesday, Sept. 21
The shallow creek meanders through; while the bridges and overpasses remain,
Pick the correct one and you’ll be at the hunt’s reign;
Scout’s honor: You won’t need a tool to crack this case,
Look carefully for B-32-100-81, it’s the end of the chase.
The rules were similar to previous years and are listed below. The 2011 Oktoberfest Medallion:
- was always located within the La Crosse city limits.
- was never buried in the ground.
- was always on public property.
- was accessible 24 hours, BUT posted hours should be observed.
- fit in the palm of a hand.
- may be camouflaged.
The person finding the official Oktoberfest Medallion should call the number on the back of the medallion. The finder must wear an official, current-year Oktoberfest button to collect the entire prize package.
