Oktoberfest Mural Unveiled

La Crosse has a new “selfie spot” on the Southside Oktoberfest Grounds with the unveiling of a new mural crafted by two UW-La Crosse art students.

Julie Pleshe and Bekah Kienzle created the early 1960’s “hello from…” post-card style mural as an art project as part of their undergraduate research into murals in urban settings. The 8 by 16 foot artwork is just inside the main entrance to the grounds and is a “can’t miss” addition to Oktoberfest this year. Within the letters that spell “La Crosse” are numerous community landmarks and scenes. The marquee of the Rivoli Theatre reads “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” – a movie whose debut was only a few weeks apart from the first Oktoberfest celebration in 1961.

The students were advised by UW-La Crosse art faculty member Jennifer Terpstra, who is also a former Oktoberfest Grenadier and the spouse of 2015 Torchlight Parade Marshal Mark Terpstra.
